How to Apply for University Admission in Sri Lanka: UGC 2025/2026 Guide
The release of the G.C.E. A/L results marks the beginning of an important transition for thousands of students in Sri Lanka. The UGC is the central body responsible for university admissions. For the 2025/2026 academic year (entry in 2026), the process is digital-first, requiring students to be both tech-savvy and highly organized.
Meeting the Eligibility Bar
Before you can even consider which degree to pursue, you must meet the minimum academic standards. To be eligible for admission, a candidate must have obtained at least an ‘S’ grade in all three approved subjects in a single sitting, within a maximum of three attempts.
Furthermore, the Common General Paper is a critical hurdle. A minimum score of 30% is mandatory. If you failed to reach this mark in your current sitting but achieved it in a previous attempt (within your three allowed sittings), that previous result can be used for eligibility. Without this 30%, you cannot register for a course, even if your Z-score is exceptionally high.
The Role of the Admissions Handbook | How to get?
The University Admissions Handbook is the most vital document for any applicant. It contains “Uni-Codes” for 261 different course-university combinations. The handbook costs Rs. 1,000 and can be purchased at the UGC Secretariat or through authorized agents. If you want to buy it through post, you must deposit the fee (1000Rs) into the UGC’s Bank account and send the receipt to the UGC along with a self-addressed envelope.
Navigating the Online Application
Applying online via www.ugc.ac.lk is compulsory. For the current cycle, applications will open on coming days. Stay updated by following our social media for immediate alerts.

When you filling out the online application form, you can select up to 125 choices. These must be listed in order of decreasing course selection. The online system has been designed to place you in the highest-ranked choice or preference for which your Z-score qualifies. If you do not list a specific code, you will not be considered for that course, regardless of your results.
Once the online form is submitted, you must print it and send the physical copy to the UGC via Registered Post. Dont handover your applications to UGC. It will not accepted.
Aptitude Tests and Special Requirements
Certain courses, such as ICT, Tourism Management, Architecture, Fashion Design, and Music, require more than just a high Z-score. Students must pass a separate Aptitude Test conducted by the university. You must apply for these tests directly to the university before the general UGC deadline. (Keep following us for the selection test alert ontime). And passing the test is important, as well as achieving the Z-score is also necessary for course selection.
