The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially released the call for applications for university admissions for the Academic Year 2025/2026. This application cycle is specifically for students who sat for the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination in 2025.

Note: The UGC will not entertain any applications submitted after May 19, 2026.

Key Admission Requirements

To be eligible for a State University or Higher Educational Institute (HEI), candidates must meet these criteria:

  • Subject Requirements: Obtain at least ‘S’ grades in all three approved subjects in one sitting.
  • Attempt Limit: Requirements must be met within a maximum of three (03) attempts.
  • Common General Paper: A minimum mark of 30% is mandatory.
  • NIC: A valid National Identity Card is a mandatory requirement for the online application.

The Application Process: Step-by-Step

1. Obtain the Handbook

The University Admissions Handbook for 2025/2026 is required to identify “Uni-Codes”. It costs Rs. 1000/= and can be purchased from:

  • The UGC Secretariat (Colombo 07).
  • Authorized distributing agents (Sarasavi, Vijitha Yapa, M.D. Gunasena, etc.).
  • By post (payment to BOC Account No. 0002323287 or People’s Bank Account No. 167-1-001-4-3169407).

2. Apply Online

Submission of applications is compulsory online via the official portal: www.ugc.ac.lk.

3. Select Your Uni-Codes

  • There are 121 different courses and 255 unique Uni-Codes available.
  • Candidates can mark a maximum of 125 choices.
  • Crucial: List your choices in decreasing order of preference. You will only be considered for the specific codes you list.

4. Post the Application

After online submission, you must print the application and send it via Registered Post to:

Courses Requiring Aptitude Tests

Selection for the following courses requires passing an Aptitude/Practical Test in addition to the Z-score:

  • Architecture / Design / Fashion Design (University of Moratuwa)
  • Music / Dance / Drama & Theatre (Multiple Universities)
  • Physical Education / Sports Science (Jaffna, Sabaragamuwa, Kelaniya)
  • Film & Television Studies (University of Kelaniya)
